Build a strong academic foundation by enrolling in courses that align with your academic readiness. The goal of course placement is to ensure that you enroll in courses that match your preparation. The math, science, and language departments offer recommendations to help you enroll in courses that will be your best fit. Their recommendations may be based on standardized tests (e.g. AP, SAT, A-level, IB), departmental placement tests, or consultation. Reach out to advising resources if you need additional help deciding on the right course placement. Placement Guidance Princeton course expectations may differ considerably from those you’ve experienced elsewhere. You may spend more time on assignments or preparing for class, or be asked to apply knowledge in new ways. Your professors, faculty adviser, peer academic advisers, and residential college deans can help you understand your placement options. If you notice that a course is too demanding or not demanding enough, talk with your professor first about your observations, and discuss whether a different course might be a better fit. Your professor can help you interpret feedback and outline the arc of the course, and how it will involve learning new material and reviewing familiar concepts. Advising Resources Placement will be a central topic during the first meeting with your faculty adviser. In addition, you may connect with the assistant dean for studies in your residential college to talk about placement recommendations and choices. The SEAS Undergraduate Affairs Office offers guidance to B.S.E. students on placement in general math and science. Advanced Placement and Advanced Standing Advanced placement from standardized exams and placement tests may be used to fulfill departmental requirements or reduce your time to degree. If you have sufficient units of advanced placement, you may consider taking one or two semesters of advanced standing. Advanced standing requirements differ for A.B. versus B.S.E candidates. Explore your options with your residential college assistant dean for studies. Advanced Placement Enter upper-level courses, fulfill certain requirements, or attain advanced standing.
