Academic Year 2023-24 - Class of 2027 The Advanced Placement Credit Reference Table lists the credit and placement recommendations of academic departments that award advanced placement credit. The credit and placement policies described apply to Advanced Placement (AP), IB, A-level, and SAT subject test scores. To determine if you should take Princeton placement tests, read details about placement testing in chemistry, physics, computer science, and languages taught at Princeton. Credit Policies and Placement Recommendations by Subject Languages Subject Area Minimum Score [1] Units of AP Princeton Course(s) Replaced May Not Take and Use AP Credit [2] Recommended Placement German AP 5 / GM SAT ST 760 2 German 101, 102, 105, 107 Any 100-level German course 200-level German course Hebrew MH SAT ST 760 2 Hebrew 101, 102, 105, 107 Any 100-level Hebrew course 300-level Hebrew course Spanish AP 5/ SP SAT ST 760 2 Spanish 101, 102, 107 Any 100-level Spanish course 200-level Spanish course Only two units of AP in each foreign language will be granted, regardless of how many Princeton courses the AP replaces. The other languages taught at Princeton do NOT accept standardized test scores. Students may take a placement test in any foreign language taught at Princeton to determine placement and credit. See Path to Princeton(link is external) for additional details and test links. Entering students who fulfill the language requirement through their language placement test score earn two units of advanced placement credit. Historical Analysis Subject Area Minimum Score [1] Units of AP Princeton Course(s) Replaced May Not Take and Use AP Credit [2] Recommended Placement History, European AP 4 1 no equivalent course not applicable Departmental permission needed to enroll in courses closed to first-year students History, U.S. AP 4 1 no equivalent course not applicable History, World AP 4 1 no equivalent course not applicable A maximum of one unit of AP in history will be granted: i.e., students attaining a score of 4 on all three exams will be awarded one unit of AP. Please note: Students with exceptional preparation in Computer Science and who wish to place out of COS 126 and begin their studies in COS 217 or 226 may choose to take the Computer Science Placement Test(link is external). Note that this placement does not in itself satisfy the BSE computing requirement, which must be fulfilled by one of these three courses. No AP credit is granted through successful placement out of COS126. Science and Engineering Subject Area Minimum Score [1] Units of AP Princeton Course(s) Replaced May Not Take and Use AP Credit [2] Recommended Placement Biology (EEB or MOL) AP 5 2 MOL 101 and EEB/MOL 211 for non-EEB majors only Any 100- or 200-level EEB or MOL course (except EEB 255) ISC 231-232 MOL/EEB 214 for MOL majors (forfeit one unit of AP); MOL/EEB 211 and 214 for EEB majors (forfeit two units of AP) Chemistry AP 5 1 Fulfills one semester of General Chemistry. Students seeking to fulfill the General Chemistry two-semester sequence (201/7 and 202) should enroll in CHM215 or CHM202. CHM215 may not be taken if CHM201/207 or 202 is taken. Forfeit 1 unit of AP if CHM201/207 is taken. Chemistry 201/207, ISC 231-232 Chemistry 215 Please note: The Department of Chemistry offers a placement test for students seeking to demonstrate prior chemistry competency. Details here(link is external). Students with an AP 5 (or equivalent) do not need to take the CHM placement test unless they are interested in placement into organic chemistry (CHM 301), thereby fulfilling the general chemistry sequence (CHM201/207 + 202). To place into organic chemistry, you must take the chemistry placement test. The Department of Physics offers requirement fulfillment tests for students seeking to demonstrate prior physics competency and fulfill certain program/major requirements, as well as a placement test for students who have exceptional preparation in college-level physics and wish to be considered for enrollment in Physics 207(link is external). Students interested in taking the PHY207 placement test or one of the physics requirement fulfillment tests (for satisfying the BSE physics requirement of PHY103-104 or pre-health physics requirement of PHY101-102) should read details here(link is external). Entering students with a successful score on a physics requirement fulfillment/placement test earn two units of advanced placement credit. SAT I math scores are for the new SAT administered beginning in March 2016. IB and A level score reports for 2020 will be used for placement purposes only. If students choose to take courses for which they were granted AP credit, they will forfeit the use of the AP credit for those credits for advanced standing purposes. In foreign languages, students who enroll in a 100-level course forfeit the use of both units of AP.
